Federal transportation safety officials said numerous bodies remained onboard a Chicago-to-Emeryville Amtrak train in the Nevada desert after a gravel-hauling tractor-trailer rig slammed into it east of Reno at midday Friday. The rig's driver and a train conductor were among the five confirmed dead as of late Friday. Scores of victims were sent to hospitals with injuries, while as many as 45 remained unaccounted for, federal officials said. The fiery collision happened on a lonely, windswept section of Highway 95 in the area of Lovelock, about 70 miles from Reno, at 11:24 am. Smoke from three burning cars on the 10-car train - which had 195 passengers on board, according to state officials - could be seen for miles around. Confirmed dead were the truck driver - who is from a small county in eastern Nevada - a train conductor and at least three passengers. At least 100 people were taken by bus, ambulance and helicopter to hospitals in Fallon and Reno, said Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Dan Lopez. Identifications were not available. "We're all wondering how in the world this could happen," said Kurt Althof, spokesman for Careflight helicopter ambulance, which flew two women with serious injuries to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno. "There is absolutely nothing on that highway. It's just desert. How a truck could go into a train like that out there is just bizarre." The train was the California Zephyr, which had originated in Chicago. It was due to arrive in Emeryville at 4:10 p.m., with 14 crew members onboard. Passengers spilled off the damaged cars as flames shot into the air, some helping the wounded, some running for safety among the tumbleweeds. "I've been here 22 years, and this is the first wreck like this we've had," said Linda Bohma, a waitress in nearby Fernley. "It's so pretty and quiet out here. This is awful. "Renown, the regional trauma center, reported admitting nine patients - two in critical condition, four in serious and three in fair. Amtrak spokesman Steve Kulm said he did not know if the truck had run into the train by accident or on purpose. "It's been several years since we had an event like this," Kulm said. Amtrak and area officials were unable to say which passengers were from the Bay Area. Along the route the train was scheduled to travel, through Sacramento and along the delta, riders were rattled by the news. "Wow, it wasn't a terrorist thing, was it?" Bruce Askansas of Sacramento said as he waited for his train in Emeryville. "I've been riding 10 years, and the worst I've seen was we hit a deer." Passenger Abel Ortiz, 42, of San Jose, said at the time of the accident he was sleeping on the side of the train car that was struck. "As I looked up, I saw the train being ripped up. It created an opening in our car," Ortiz told the Lahontan Valley News & Fallon Eagle Standard newspaper in Fallon. "I saw the flames come over the windows of the side, like a quick flash of flames. Then smoke filled up everything. There was some screaming." Amtrak President Joseph Boardman said in a statement that the agency was "saddened by any injury or loss of life and appreciate the emergency response by local and state agencies". "We also will focus on the details of what happened and make our experts available to the National Transportation Safety Board, which is taking the lead in the investigation," he said. "We are sensitive to the needs of our customers and employees and are working as quickly as possible to provide information and enable them to resume their travels," Boardman said.
